Case Study

Divisional Chief Executive Officer, Global Sporting Retailer

The Brief

Marlin Hawk was approached by a global sporting retailer to search for a Divisional Chief Executive Officer who could be accountable for a recent acquisition and lead the integration of the business into the group.

This was a business-critical appointment for the organisation and required an individual who could set a clear strategy, build the roadmap and execute in a way that enabled the company to increase revenue and realise a subsequent growth in market share. A passion for sports and a deep understanding of product and technology was also a must.

The Approach

Marlin Hawk took a global and innovative approach to the search. Working with the board and HR community, we conducted a ‘Video Brief’ for the appointment, interviewing members of the executive committee, including the Chief Digital Officer, to showcase the culture, brand and skill set needed for someone to be successful in this role.

Over a six-week period, our team mapped over 220 companies across a wide variety of sectors through Europe, APAC and North America. We identified General Managers & Chief Product Officers across organisations such as Amazon, ASOS and eBay, as well as more traditional retailers including Staples, Tesco and Walmart. This resulted in the identification of 348 potential profiles.

The Result

Marlin Hawk successfully placed and relocated an individual from the West Coast to Europe to undertake the position in 2019. The successful candidate was a former Commercial Leader and Chief Product Officer.

The Impact

In the last nine months, the candidate has successfully integrated the acquired business and has become part of the leadership team, driving the organisation’s digital strategy and future growth.
